SOS
From Monday 3rd- Saturday 9th of October this year the SOS organised World Orphan Week. Moto-Hike have pledged to support this initiative to promote and generate funds for the charity.
What Is SOS?
SOS Kinderdorf International (to give it's full name) was set up in 1949 in the aftermath of the Second World War by the Austrian Hermann Gmeiner to relieve the misery of countless war orphans and homeless children. Since then they have spread their work across 132 countries building over 1600 facilities.
SOS have a long-term approach to the children and communities they work with. A child who is accepted into a village will become part of a 'family' of up to 15 children who will live together in their own house, looked after by their SOS 'mother'. They will have pre-school at an SOS kindergarten, and then move on to an SOS school, both of which are also used by non-SOS kids in the neighbourhood. When they reach adolescence and feel the need to be independent of their family they can move into an SOS youth community and receive further vocational training to help them gain work skills.
Even after leaving SOS care most kids keep in touch with their families with many being actively involved with the charity into adulthood.
The villages are base for numerous community projects, whether as adult training centres, medical clinics, emergency relief centres or a whole host of other ventures.
The staff of the villages and associated centres is made up of local people.
